Dear Friends,
Every Thanksgiving, our hometown newspaper, The Yuma Pioneer, prints Thanksgiving recipes written by local second-graders. Always priceless, they make you laugh, think and see the world (or at least the holiday) through the eyes of a child. Here are some examples - spelling mistakes and all.
“Cooking a turkey is easy. First shoot the turkey. Second pluck it. Third baste the turkey. Fourth bake it for four huors at 400°. It is fun to cook a turkey.”
“1 raw turkey
2 eggs
brown sugar
1 boiling pan
1/3 cups of milk
Doesn’t a fat tasty turkey sound delisous for Thanksgiving dinner? Well if you do follow this recipe and you will have one. First buy a turkey. Then buy your ingridents. After that wash your turkey. Last add your ingridents. Finally put the turkey in the oven. Cook it for 30 minutes and have the oven preheated to 100 degrees. Then you may eat your turkey. Bake your turkey this Thanksgiving.”
We have so much to be thankful for – our family and community, our country and liberty. And yes, thankful for our children who can cook a turkey in 30 minutes at 100 degrees. (Just remember this when the turkey gets put in the oven bright and early!)
Thanksgiving isn’t about gift exchanges. It's not about candy. It's about faith and a thankful spirit. It’s a time to be with family and friends, sharing our thanks with one another. It's about the fabric of America, a nation who’s people will be forever thankful for the many blessings we have received, individually and as a nation. A nation that faces many challenges ahead, but one that is certainly worth fighting for.
So enjoy the day together and rejoice in thanksgiving. Jaime, Alyson and I extend our heartfelt best wishes to you and yours for a very blessed day.
Sincerely,
Cory, Jaime and Alyson
