Cory Gardner Emerges as GOP Favorite in 4th CD

Wednesday, March 17, 2010

Somewhat lost in the shuffle of last night's caucus coverage was the strong showing by state Rep. Cory Gardner, one of several GOP candidates running to take on incumbent Democratic Congresswoman Betsy Markey in the state's fourth congressional district.

Most of the voters in the district live in Larimer and Weld counties and Gardner cleaned up in both places, winning 44 percent of the straw poll vote in Larimer, and 63 percent in Weld.

Gardner, who is from Yuma on the eastern plains, beat two Republican rivals on their home turf. Both Diggs Brown and Tom Lucero live in Larimer County, where they received 30 percent and 14 percent, respectively.

Dean Madere, a little-known contender boasting strong backing from Tea Party and 9.12 groups, took just 11 percent in Larimer County, in spite of the large presence of conservative grass roots groups in the area.

It's an interesting measure of the impact of the new conservative activists on the caucus process. Clearly, statewide GOP candidates like Dan Maes and Ken Buck have Tea Party groups to thank for their strong showings; but the Tea Party's plans to flood the zone Tuesday night did not produce the results lesser-known conservative candidates were hoping for.

Unhappy Anniversary of Stimulus

Wednesday, February 17, 2010

Dear Friends-

One year ago today, Congresswoman Betsy Markey and Nancy Pelosi stood by President Barack Obama as he signed into law the most expensive spending bill in the history of the United States.

Rep. Markey’s biggest accomplishment in her Congressional career is her vote for billions of dollars in new spending - pork filled boondoggles - that pushed our record federal deficit off a cliff.

There’s a bumper sticker I’ve seen in Fort Collins. It says "What would Betsy do?" What would Betsy do? We can’t afford the answer!

The price tag of the so-called "Stimulus Bill" is now estimated at a staggering $862 billion dollars. That’s enough money to send every American high school Junior and Senior to a four-year private university, fully paid for, and still have more than $150 billion left over.

The stimulus has failed. But anyone with common sense knew it would fail – you simply can’t spend your way out of a recession.

And where are the jobs? National unemployment hovers around 10 percent. According to press accounts, stimulus money was spent in Congressional districts that don’t exist. Jobs were credited as being "saved" when instead the taxpayer money was used to give raises. And in Colorado, 70 percent of the so-called jobs "saved" simply protected government salaries.

One job "created" by the Stimulus bill cost the taxpayers over $1 million…to create 1 single job.

It’s time for real solutions. It’s time to stop Washington from ruining our country. It’s time to elect common sense leaders with proven records of fiscal responsibility.

It’s time to elect a leader who will do what they say and not say one thing, and then vote another way in Washington.

I am running for Congress to stop politicians from spending our country into the ground. I have developed a plan to limit spending, balance the budget and create jobs. And I hope you will join me in our effort to win back the 4th Congressional District.

Sincerely,
